Mattia International
Poetry Competition
My poem, November Rose (available in my
book,
Anathema: Poems Selected & New)
recently won
1st Prize in the 13th Mattia
International Poetry Competition
. The
poem made the shortlist of 50 finalists in
September and was awarded the top prize in
the round of final judging.

Simplicity is a sure thing to maintaining
continuity. Often a poet will stagger between
multiple themes and lose the essence of
what they were trying to evoke out of the
reader (or themselves) ... Andreas Gripp
does a masterful job of evoking a sense of
‘loneliness’ from the reader for a late
blooming rose. The wonderful play on the
cliché “Jane/Johnny-come-lately” quite
frankly thrusts the reader forward, instead of
having the opposite effect – as clichés quite
often do. There is an obvious spiral into
loneliness that progresses through the
piece. This “First Place” winner stood out
from the crowd, much as the rose within it
did.
